And I have decided to feature two home tours in a month. Are you excited!! Here's what I have in my bag today. Enjoy!!

UPDATE
Here is an updated video tour of Kapila's home that I shot in 2018
CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO

Today's home tour is special because it's from my hometown Indore, where I spent my youth and formative years of life. The city built by queen Ahilya Bai Holkar is known for its architectural splendours, mouth-watering culinary delights and also known as the birth land of vocal Gharana of Indian classical music, Indore Gharana. I can talk endlessly about Indore but then we have a beautiful home to talk about today, so just sit back and relax and enjoy this home tour.

Indian home Tour

This beautiful abode is owned by Kapila and Sonal Banerjee, a couple who is equally enthusiastic about home decor as we are all here at 3D. Kapila is a multifaceted lady who not only has a keen interest in home decorating but also paints very well. Most of the paintings in her home are done by herself. Decor in this home is a beautiful collision of Indian and international cultures. Let's take a tour of this home as Kapila describes her style, talks about her passion and lot more.

Indian Home Tour

Describe your home in just a few words:
Kapila: Bright, vibrant, colourful with lifes nostalgic journey till date.
.
Whether it's an apartment or an independent house:
Kapila: Its an apartment having 2 floors

It's area:
Kapila: Our current house is a 1900 sqft having 3 rooms and an independent terrace to ourselves.

Indian Home Tour

Tell us about yourself, your family and location:
Kapila: Proud & blessed mother of twin daughters. Have lived my early childhood at Indore, back during the college days I had very passionate interest in trying my hands at interior designing which led me learning basic through the formal diploma in interior designing. While I could not pursue it as a profession but the interest continued right from the time when I did the dcor of my parental house to my own house after marriage. Being happily married to Sonal for nearly 13 years and counting, we have been moving places due to work demands of Sonal from Indore at the start point or marriage and subsequently to Gwalior,Mumbai, and Kolkata within India before going on an overseas trip with livestock and baggage to Kenya, Africa for about 4 years.

Wall Decor

Though I have returned back with kids to Indore where we have our own house, Sonal continued his overseas stint and works at Yangon, Myanmar. By the way, I worked for more than a decade in various corporate organisations before taking sabbatical due to motherhood taking precedence over work. I am a strong believer of a woman being independent and yet continue to be playing multiple roles as we have been doing for years. Motherhood has given a new meaning to me and which like everyone I have always cherished.

Indian Decor Ideas

Both I and Sonal have always liked and cherished Indore as a city with middle-class values & vibrancy, weather and its ever changing development landscape. We shall eventually build our own house from the first brick to the dcor and guess who shall be in command of our future project ..

Indian Home Tour

Well, no prizes for guessing, we all know it already and we love how you decorate. Tells us about your decorating style:
Kapila: Playing with colours, artefacts in both vintage & contemporary style and furniture have been the central theme of all my dcor. I love fresh plants and flowers all around.

Indian Home Tour

I have also tried to carry reminiscence of key dcor items from each city where I have lived since my marriage so that the dcor also has a reflection of my journeys in life till date.

Indian Decor Ideas

The Buddha in the above picture is from Yangon and peacocks from Bangkok street shopping. The wooden box is from Masai Mara Kenya.

Indian Home Tour

Where do you get the inspiration from:
Kapila: My biggest inspiration was in being self-creative in my parents house and with Sonal after marriage. Our marital life started with a bare minimum, almost an empty house having just a simple mattresses. Time never stopped since then and both of us have also not stopped our common passion for house collectibles. My daughters aged 8 have also developed a taste for dcor of their own room in specific style and a sense of appreciation for any new dcor or changes in the house. My close friend Hemal too has also been instrumental in inspiring me in my efforts.

Indian home Tour

Which is your favourite spot in your home and why:
Kapila: The family room where I spend most of my time with kids and my extended family. Day bed corner is the most comforting zone in the house with natural light and fresh air from the adjoining balcony.

Indian Home Tour

What are your hobbies:
Kapila: Home dcor, painting, full-time rearing of my daughters, and finally to be a hopeful small time home dcor entrepreneur in the time ahead.

Please give your valuable advice to dcor enthusiast 3D readers:
Kapila: Try new things with earthenware dcor, be updated on trends, use fresh plants and flowers and finally its not about the size but about the space utility.

Indian Home Tour

I loved each nook and corner of this tastefully done up home and I am inspired to make some changes in my home too. What about you dear readers, how do you find this home and which one is your favorite room/decor accessory. Kitchen Storage Solutions | Luxury Home Decoration 2019

A kitchen is a place where controlling the clutter is quite a task.
It is a place which is by necessity filled with stuff. No matter how big or small your kitchen is quite often you will find yourself struggling for more and more storage. And I believe that it's not the 'space' but 'how you make use of every inch of available space' is what matters and makes your kitchen look organized. There are many ways you can squeeze a little extra storage out of a small kitchen. 3D in association with CapriCoast brings to you smart kitchen storage solutions. If you are struggling to store the stuff in your kitchen in an efficient way then this post is just for you.

CapriCoast Kitchen Storage Solutions
  • Building lots of cabinets doesn't necessarily mean a lot of storage space until you make good use of them. An easy way to double up the space inside the cabinets is to use multilevel wire racks to keep the items like jars, containers and bottles. You can use as many wire racks as the space allows you to and there you have smart storage to store more stuff inside the cabinets now.
CapriCoast Kitchen Storage Solutions
  • Inside the kitchen cabinets install some wire shelves on the cabinet doors too. Such wire shelves will provide the extra storage space. Small cans, bottles or jars can be kept here leaving the cabinet space free to keep some other stuff. If you need a space to hang the stuff then installing pegboard on the inside of cabinet doors can increase the storage space in a dramatic way. You can hang a lot of stuff there.
  • Kitchen backsplash is usually left as is but it can also be used to hold some of your kitchen stuff in an efficient way. Installing peg boards on kitchen backsplash will give an ample space for all the stuff that you use quite often like spoons, ladles, pans and a wire rack containing all oil bottles and spices.
  • Corners in the kitchen are the most difficult places to handle when it comes to storing and quite often people struggle to take out the item that is stored in the back in a corner. Install racks that spin in the corners to allow easy access to the items stored in the back.
CapriCoast Kitchen Storage Solutions
  • In most of the kitchens, there is always a small narrow space left next to the refrigerator. This space can be utilized to store plenty of canned goods. A rack can be installed in that space to give you a lot of storage space where you can store all your canned food and other items. If you are not a fan of open shelving and racks then install pull out cabinets in such thin spaces. It will hide away the stuff and give your kitchen a clean and organized look.
  • A huge amount of storage can be found under the sink if the available space is utilized smartly. CapriCoast has lots of storage solutions and designs especially for under the sink space. Few drawers and few shelves can create lots of storage space under the kitchen sink. You can store house cleaning supplies and lot more there.
CapriCoast Kitchen Storage Solutions
  • If you have a big kitchen and your budget allows you then opt for a kitchen island. It can solve kitchen storage problem to a great extent.  Pots and pans can be hung on the rail above the kitchen island to give your kitchen an interesting look. Kitchen island provides you an extra storage space to store your cookbooks, kitchen appliances, crockery, cookwares and lots of such stuff inside the cabinets under the island.
Small changes can definitely bring about a big difference. I hope this post has given you lots of smart kitchen storage ideas and now you are able to put the space in your kitchen to good use. Do check out more such ideas on CapriCoast website here. To know more about kitchen interiors click here and for DIY kitchen artwork click here.

All About Flush Doors | Luxury Home Decoration 2019

The first impression usually lasts longer and being a decor blogger, I find it true especially for entrance to our homes. Entrance creates a lasting impression if it is done elegantly but somehow doors remain unnoticed unless either they are strikingly beautiful or completely in a bad shape. Aren't you agree!!

Doors being an important feature in every home should not only be pleasing to the eyes but should also possess features like durability, strength, water and heat resistance and the most important thing is it should not warp with time. To install plain and dull looking doors for the mere purpose of maintaining privacy and security is passe. Doors these days have become much more than that. More specifically flush doors are in trend and have become a beautiful structure and integral part of a homes interiors.

Do you know when it comes to decorating homes there are numerous options available for homeowners to choose a door from like panel doors, glass doors, PVC doors, steel doors, membrane doors, skin doors, and the most important ones flush doors. Why not let's talk more about flush doors and why these doors have become the first choice of every homeowner.

I had always wondered what flush doors are made of but after going through Century Ply's website, I have gained some knowledge now. A flush door has a basic structure composed of solid blockboard core, vertical stiles, and horizontal rails that create a pre-fixed frame. The blockboard consists of wooden strips that are placed edge-to-edge and sandwiched between veneers, then bonded under high pressure and temperature using a synthetic resin. Let's understand it this way, it is a door that is made of a timber frame covered with ply from both the sides and then the hollow part inside is filled with rectangular blocks of soft wood and that's why it doesn't warp with time. Then a decorative finish is given by fixing veneer on the top, hence they are available in a number of colours, patterns and finishes. A flush door is so called because it has an entirely smooth surface. You splash the water on its surface and it would simply flow off without accumulating.
I have come across so many brands that claim to offer quality flush doors but CenturyPly stands out from the rest for its superior quality. CenturyPly has mastered the art of creating flush doors, which are not only functional in terms of strength and security but also visually appealing and inviting to the viewers eye.

Now let me tell you some benefits of using flush doors especially CenturyPly flush doors over other regular ones that make them far superior from regular flush doors:
  • CenturyPly flush doors are stiff, impact resistance and possess high strength.
  • These doors are dimensionally accurate and stable
  • Regular flush doors will definitely but CenturyPly flush doors never warp with time. As they are made up of softwood rectangular blocks on the inside.
  • CenturyPly flush doors are not heavier as is the case with regular flush doors or plywood doors and can be easily installed and operated in everyday use.
  • As these doors are chemically treated and vacuum pressed they are heat and water resistant
  • The material cost in making flush door is very less and hence, flush doors are more economical
  • CenturyPly flush doors are durable and have a high screw holding capacity.
  • CenturyPly Flush doors come with a lock area on both sides for ease of installation.
  • These doors are decay proof. Chemical treatment makes the flush door termite and fungi free.
  • CenturyPly flush doors offer a variety of designs and decorative finish. These doors provide attractive, warm and traditional appearance.
  • They can be made easily in any shape and are easy to install.
  • CenturyPly gives the homeowners the opportunity to get the flush doors customize as per their requirement and choice.
  • CenturyPly flush door surface is highly resistant to stains, scratches and crash
  • These doors require less maintenance

Now even after reading all this, you still have some doubts in your mind then I would suggest you watch this video that shows the entire manufacturing process of flush doors. CenturyPly flush doors are of Boiling Water Proof Grade, and IS 2202 1 certified. But, this kind of quality is only maintained because their doors pass through a total of 15 rigorous tests, yes!! you read it right! 15 rigorous tests and some of them are the impact indentation test, shock resistance test, slamming test, screw withdrawal resistance test and glue adhesion test.

Now you know how much care, precision and attention go into making a single door. Proving that doors are not merely for allowing or prohibiting access to an area, but they hold a much bigger purpose in a home and create a warm, welcoming feeling, and making a grand first impression that lasts forever.
I hope you enjoyed knowing all about CenturyPly flush doors and will give doors of your home the importance they deserve.

DIY Painted Bamboo/Grass Placemats | Luxury Home Decoration 2019

As this month I am focusing on kitchen and dining spaces, here is a DIY idea to turn drab looking bamboo or grass placemats into fab ones. You can check previous posts in this series, DIY kitchen artwork here and the smart way to do the kitchen interiors here. Okay! now let's get started with today's DIY.

Bamboo Placemats

I had a set of six grass placemats since the time I was in Delhi. For initial few years, I didn't use them and after I started using them, I didn't like the dull look of the placemats. Every time I looked at them, it felt like as if placemats were screaming at me and requesting me to give them a makeover. I accepted their request just a few days ago. First, I figured out that the color of the placemats has to be changed and secondly I didn't like the plain look of them so something extra has to be added to the placemats. Do you want to see...have a look!

Bamboo Placemats

Okay! so it was clear that I will be changing the color of the placemats and adding some bling to it. For color, I chose ochre as it helps in creating a warm ambiance and to add some bling I bought beautiful golden lace so that I can use these placemats during the festive season. But before we start this DIY let's first clean the bamboo/grass placemats.

Here is how to clean bamboo placemats:

Bamboo Placemats
DIY Painted Bamboo/Grass Placemats:
Once the placemats are clean and dry you can start painting them in your choice of color. Acrylic colors are best to paint bamboo placemats. It is always a good idea to start painting from the edges towards the center.

Bamboo Placemats

Let it dry and then you can glue golden lace or any other embellishment on the edges of the bamboo placemats. You can stick the lace using fabric glue or glue gun.

Bamboo Placemats

After adding lace I wanted to add more bling to the placemats so using glitters I drew a paisley pattern on the border.

Bamboo Placemats

In the last when everything is dried and fixed properly rub a little oil (coconut oil) on the placemats for extra shine. Oil forms a protective layer and protects the placemats from the growth of molds.
Here are some images how a little change can make a big difference.

Bamboo Placemats

Right now I am using the painted bamboo placemat on my coffee table as I painted only one. Once all the four placemats are ready I will use them on my dining table. Till then I am enjoying my coffee table decor.

Bamboo Placemats

Did you like this DIY!! Do you have something like this lying unused in a corner and screaming at you to give it a new lease of life. Oh, well then the weekend is here and you can try something like this. Below is one final shot of before and after of the bamboo placemats.

Home Tour: Padmamanasa Jwalaniah | Luxury Home Decoration 2019

Few months ago,
I received a request from a lovely reader of 3D to feature a home of a fellow blogger and a dear friend Padmamanasa. The request was so sweet and tempting that I couldn't resist asking Manasa if it was possible. Despite her super busy schedule, Manasa took out the time to send me some dazzlingly beautiful images of her strikingly beautiful home. Manasa blogs sporadically at ForTheLoveOfSunshineCorners, a blog loved by all the decor enthusiasts and is quite addictive. Here is a tte--tte with Manasa as she takes us through her collected, curated and most importantly a created home.

Thank you, Disha for featuring our home in my favourite decor and lifestyle blog - Design Decor & DishaWe live in a beautiful green city  - Bangalore, India. We have been living in this work-in-progress home ,which we recreate every day, for past 12 years.

Entrance to the home lends the cheerful and positive vibe. Dashavtar above the door frame was painted by her husband and Guruvaayoorappan painting in the foyer is also done by Manasa's extremely talented artist husband Pradosh Nair. Surprised!! Well, most of the paintings in their home are done by Pradosh. In case you are tempted to see more of his work, Blobs Of Rainbow is the blog where you can find his extraordinary work.

Indian Decor

Manasa adds,
I grew up in a small town in southern part of Karnataka, with a lot of greens grown on the terrace in the 80s! My parents believed in utilitarian/ functional value of the things they brought home. But that did not stop me from spending lot of time dreaming of/ decorating/ redecorating the old large home with whatever we had :)

Indian Home Decor

Manasa is a person who is charming, warm and full of energy and her home is a true reflection of her personality. All the rooms have a feature wall painted in bold colours that exude warmth. In the living room, orange wall sets a perfect backdrop for wooden cabinets and brass knick-knacks on them. Furnishings are complementing the wall colour and making the place look cohesive.

Indian Home Decor

A large Madhubani painting on the wall and a shelf that holds her breathtakingly beautiful collection of brass create a focal point in the living room. Manasa has a knack for adding a special home accent called 'life' and cleverly uses it to transform her space into an inspiring and elegant den. Do you know how it started all.
Manasa claims,
"I guess I shared the love for lovely spaces from my maternal uncle and my older brother. My older brother, who spent quite a few years in the middle east, came back with a lot of decor magazines. I remember drooling over these magazines for hours together as a school going girl. I guess the love for beautiful spaces started there."

Indian Home Decor

Placed in a corner in the living room and enhancing the beauty of the space is this working gramophone that Manasa had won in the contest and her prize winning entry was an image of her remarkably attractive balcony garden. Don't worry, we will take a look of her balcony too :)
Manasa adds cheerfully that "What a pleasure it is to hear to old Bengali songs in an antique gramophone. It is a sheer bliss transporting us to re-independence era, I tell you!"

Indian Home Decor

Nataraja statue graces the another corner of the living room. 'Beautiful' would be an understatement for this majestic idol. Manasa knows the decor philosophy quite well and has placed all the home accents in such a way that they offer a place for the eye to rest and admire the beauty of it.

Indian Home decor

Manasa recalls her journey of decorating various homes she has lived in over the period of time, "fast forward to the hostel/ PG days when I moved to Bangalore/ Delhi. I spent a lot of energy and had loads of fun in decorating my space on shoe string budget! I spent quite a few evenings at Hauzkhas and Janpath Marg to set-up my tiny hostel room. Then came 2 bedroom rented space at Bangalore. This time, I had little more budget, as I moved from assistantship to salary :)  Then came the current home.

Let's take a look at her dining room. Ochre and brown play the key role here in creating a warm and cosy dining space. An oversized mirror on the wall above the dark wood cabinet is not only creating an illusion of grandeur but also adding glamour to the space. 'The lone daisy' painting adorning the wall of the dining room is done by Pradosh again :)

Indian Decor

Beautiful display of family portraits in wooden picture frames bring striking elegance. It can easily bring back lots of memories and become a conversation starter while the family enjoys meals together.

Indian Home Decor

Spicing up the kitchen wasn't a big deal for Manasa. She is very creative and knows how to make things work and add style to any space. Paintings fill up the empty space making it lively and cheerful place to prepare meals for the family and a classic pendant light illuminate the kitchen in style. Did you notice the cute little step ladder in the corner. It holds all the recipe books, some knick-knacks and adds the aesthetic charm to the kitchen's interior.

Indian home Decor

A colourful ceramic spice rack is what I am eyeing in the below image, it's beautiful beyond words. Manasa's collection of glass bottles, pestle and mortar, oil dispensers and blue pottery is exquisite. A beautiful wooden rack in the corner is used to display her collection of mugs in vibrant hues.

Indian Home Decor

Manasa wanted a red wall in her home and this is the bedroom where the feature wall is red and grabbing all the attention. This wall is close to her heart for one more reason, it holds felicitation for her father. An antique teak wood bed that is more than 80 years old is the statement piece in the room. She has endless love for wood in a dark tone and vintage pieces.

Indian Home Decor

She has recently added these floating shelves on the same red wall to hold her ever growing collection of books.

Indian Home Decor

Opposite to the red wall is this beautiful gallery wall that houses alluring paintings done by her husband Pradosh. Adding extra pizzazz to the gallery wall is a hanging brass diya.

Indian Home Decor

Bedside table acts as a stage to display the decor accents in most fascinating ways. Manasa adds, "I can never spare my home from brass and solid dark wood."

Indian Home Decor

Below is a picture of their kids' room. Manasa has done a great job in kids' room by placing wooden rack and baskets that provide ample storage. All the books and board games are well organised and styled in the shelf  along with some toys and pictures of the kids.

Indian Home Decor

Applique work sheers on the window make the room look bright and dreamy.

Indian home Decor

'Crib-turned-sofa' the most clever upcycling project is what I would call it. After their daughter had grown up the crib was lying unused at the one corner of the kids' room consuming the space. Manasa put her thinking cap on and this cutest and functional sofa for the kids was the result.

Indian Home Decor

Now let's take a peek inside her bathroom and I am sure you will be spellbound with the creativity and aesthetic sense of this couple. Manasa tells us how this entire corner came together,

I am a curator at heart and hubby is an artist! Our home has been the beneficiary of this!! (sometimes victim too :p). We have collected stuff over years and let gone off quite a bit. Both I & hubby are major fans of Goan architecture/  interiors/ sunny colours. We wanted to have a tiny goan corner at home for some time now.  Hubby had presented a lovely tiled mirror for my birthday couple of years back. We had put this up at our hand wash corner. The colours were finalised, hubby zeroed in on ink blue colour. I was not particularly crazy about the beige backsplash tiles, that came with the home. I wanted sunny yellow coloured tiles instead! And voila the tiles were painted sunny yellow!

No prizes for guessing that the painting is again by Pradosh. Did you like this Goan corner in Manasa's home? I am so determined that someday I will definitely try something like this in my home too :)

Indian Home Decor

This airy and breezy room is the master bedroom. Teal wall to add some calming effect in her sleep sanctuary. No space in her home is complete without the use of dark wood and painting by her husband. So their bedroom is no exception. A peaceful and attractive reading corner like this is every reader's dream.

Indian Home Decor

And here's the prize-winning balcony garden of Manasa. The beautiful mural on the wall you see is hand painted by her. Little tweaks done by the duo in their home are quite impressive and commendable.
She adds,
This home is a ground floor flat with ever so tiny terrace. Fairly spacious balconies. (Comparison here is to what I call as terrace :P).12 years ago,  when the interiors guys did a fab job of making a home, an almost European one, little did he know what will become of his European interiors a few years later!

Indian Home Decor

By now you all must have figured out that there has to be a piece of dark wood to quench Manasa's thirst for it and hence there lying a latt bench from Urban Ladder in her cosy and undisputedly gorgeous balcony garden.
She chimes in that, "this is our favourite place to sit & watch Bangalore rains, to do the homework, to sit down and read a book for adults & babies alike at home!."

Indian Home Decor

Here is one more view of her balcony garden. Beauty flows from each and every corner of her home.

Indian Home Decor

Now for all the brass and bronze lovers out there, this is something for you too! I covet her stunning brass collection. Do you?

Indian Home Decor

Here is what she says about her passion for metals, "I feel the brass & bronze artefacts are timeless & add an old world charm to our place. I love the yellow gleam of brass urlis, gindis, para & nilavilakku. I love the texture of bronze & the character the metal adds."

This brass Tara idol is my favourite. It is so majestic and there is something mystical about this picture.

Indian Home Decor

Manasa sums it up beautifully by saying, "I love the dark wood and creams and greens. Hubby loves the brass and colours. Son loves both and daughter is yet to decide! Our home, eventually what we love as family, believe our roots are and home is!"

It is time to wrap up and say goodbye to you dear readers with few more pictures from Manasa's heavenly abode.
